Domaine Billard Pere et FilsOne of the perks of being in the wine trade is that you get to travel to some beautiful areas of France (among other countries) and meet winemakers passionate about what they do.
Jerome Billard is such a man and we met up with the whole family on our last trip to Burgundy. We tasted the wines from his 2013 vintage and were so impressed with the quality we thought we have to bring some back to the UK. Unsurprisingly both his whites, Saint Romain and Saint Aubin 1er Cru, proved very popular and we sold out in no time! We called Jerome to order more but he had also sold out. He said not to worry, the 2014 vintage was looking good and would be available from August. 'Excellent!' we said and immediately placed an order. WinemakingSince taking over from his father in 1999, Jerome brought a new philosophy to the family domaine. Combining tradition and innovation, Jerome continually strives for quality and whether it is in the vineyard or the cellar he wants the production of his wines to truly express the Terroir from which they are grown.
Jerome follows the principles of organic farming, keeping yields low with the use of cover crops. Only indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation and the entire production is bottled on the estate. There are no Chemicals used in weeding and only organic compost is used with the vines. The TerroirThe domaine is located in the small town of La Rochepot and has approximately 12.5 hectares of vineyards in various appellations including Saint Romain, Pommard and 1er cru in Saint Aubin.
Lying only 3 miles west of the celebrated slope of Montrachet, which has the most prestigious chardonnay in the world, the soil here is chalky and the vines grow on steep slopes with good drainage. |
