Boris Champy 2021

Boris Champy 2021

It was great to catch up with our good friend Boris Champy in the picturesque village of Nantoux back in November when we tasted the 2021 burgundies. It is a delight to see how he has made a great success of his domaine in such a short amount of time. His long experience at Domaine des Lambrays and Louis Latour as well as Dominus in Napa armed him with everything he needed to build his own domaine. You may remember that he managed to get his hands on the biodynamic Domaine of Didier Montchovet. Didier was the man who taught DRC, Leflaive and Leroy how to grow biodynamically…so the vines are in perfect condition. As Neil Martin says “Champy is a good example of how a talented and driven winemaker doesn’t need a bundle of Grand Crus in order to make a name for himself.”

The 2021’s are again great quality and value for money. We loved the whole range and found that his Côteaux Bourguignons made from the often ignored Gamay was simply scrumptious. We decided to offer a few cases here this year. His new Aligoté made using a vertical press (hence the name) using a very long press of more than 6 hours is a pure as crystal wine which will wow you. There were only 1,000 bottles made as he can only do one press due to the time constraint. We have the UK exclusive on that wine so let us know quickly if you want one of the few cases.

The rest of the range can be bought blind so take your pick! There is 50% less wine this year so we expect to sell out quickly…

Boris is already the recognised leader in the Hautes-Côtes and is pushing this region into the limelight, all with very fairly prices wines! A nice change from some other stars who demand extortionate prices.

“In short, we appear to be witnessing the overnight emergence of a new reference-point producer, and I encourage readers to take notice.” – William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

“Boris has translated the vintage wonderfully well – great whites that you can blind-buy and a fair amount of great reds too – bravo!” – Bill Nanson, Burgundy Report

The 2021 Bourgogne Aligote Dore "Presse Verticale" contains a little more new oak than the regular cuvee (50%). It has a tightly knit bouquet with grapefruit, fresh lychee and honeysuckle notes that are a little more intense in style. The palate is well-balanced with a fine bead of acidity. A little new oak will need to be subsumed in time, but there is clearly sufficient fruit to do that. Excellent. [Neal Martin, 05/01/2023]

The 2021 Beaune Les Vignes Franches 1er Cru has slightly more stems than the Aux Coucherias (65%). It offers darker fruit laced with bay leaf and clove, with a background note of cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins that are velvety smooth, almost creamy in texture, with a slightly confit-like finish. Very seductive. [Neal Martin, 05/01/2023]

The 2021 Bourgogne Aligote Dore has a fragrant nose with yellow plum, nectarine and a touch of honeysuckle. The palate has strong pear and grapefruit notes on the entry. There's sharp acidity with a lively citrus finish. The 2021 is very fine and refreshing. [Neal Martin, 05/01/2023]

The 2021 Pommard En Boeuf, which undergoes a slightly later bud break than nearby lieux-dits, has a transparent, fragrant bouquet with brambly red fruit, crushed stone and light camphor scents. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly drier tannins than the 2020. It's structured and a little firm on the saline finish. The 2021 just needs a touch more elegance. [Neal Martin, 05/01/2023]

The 2021 Coteaux Bourguignons, which is made from Gamay Fins, has a perfumed dark red cherry and cranberry-scented bouquet. The palate is well balanced with a hint of bell pepper on the entry (courtesy of the 50% whole bunches). It's well structured with sour cherry and strawberry on the finish. Fine. The 2021 Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes de Beaune "Bignon 421" comes exclusively from vines trained on the lyre system, which hardly suffered any frost damage. It has a floral bouquet with ebullient redcurrant and cranberry fruits that burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and plenty of dark berry fruit with a touch of spice on its structured finish. There's a bit of reduction here, and it will benefit from two to three years in bottle. [Neal Martin, 05/01/2023]
