Domaine William Fèvre 2022

Domaine William Fèvre 2022

Absolutely stunning wines from Fèvre once again, matching or beating the scores of even Raveneau. We still don’t understand why Artemis sold this Domaine off to the Rothschilds, as the quality is stratospheric and you can’t get better vineyards.

(Well… we do know now, as it turns out the vineyards are actually still owned by the Fèvre family, while Domaine Fèvre actually only makes and sells the wines. And Artemis wants to own the vineyards…)

Regardless, these wines are some of the best Chablis you can find, and the 2022s are worth stocking up on.

“Chablis remains good value across all tiers, particularly when compared to the escalating prices for Burgundy wines from the Côte d’Or, Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâconnais.

Chablis 2022 can be recommended as a wine to enjoy while relatively youthful, but with the higher-scoring wines – and those from the top producers – being able to age beautifully for many years.

It is a vintage with a winning combination of fruit ripeness combined with fresh acidity and classic Chablis notes of salinity and minerality. A year to stock up on.”

Andy Howard MW, Decanter

2022 Vintage

The big news here of course is that Artémis Domaines, the acquisitive French wine company owned by the Pinault family that includes the Burgundian Domaines Eugénie and Clos de Tart, as well as Château Latour among others, has chosen to divest Domaine William Fèvre to the owners of Château Lafite-Rothschild for an undisclosed sum. When I first heard the news, I confess to wondering what a Bordeaux-centric conglomerate was doing buying a large Chablis-based operation that controls about 78 ha of prime vineyards. However, after some reflection, I now believe that it was a stroke of genius, at least from the standpoint of having acquired the uncontested best holdings in all of Chablis. No other domaine comes even remotely close to matching what Fèvre owns and all of it in the original heart of the appellation – it’s literally the best of the best, or perhaps the phrase crème de la crème is more appropriate! Admittedly, I don’t know what price was paid, and I’m sure it was considerable, but whatever it was, the Rothschild conglomerate potentially bought the brightest jewel of Chablis. Now whether they can appropriately monetize it is a separate question but if they don’t, it will be due to mismanagement, not the lack of the best terroirs that Chablis has to offer. Speaking of separate questions, the divestiture also again raises the question as what Artémis is going to do with Bouchard Père & Fils. Allen Meadows’, Burghound

Burghound Scores

Wines rated 90 points or above are worth a special effort to find and cellar. Wines rated 85 or above are recommended, especially among regional and villages-level wines. There will be relatively few 90+ point wines, simply because there are relatively few outstanding and superlative wines.

95 – 100: Truly incomparable and emotionally thrilling. A wine so rated is as good as a wine gets. By definition, it is reference standard for its appellation.

90 – 94: Outstanding. Worth a special effort to purchase and cellar and will provide memorable drinking experiences.

85 – 89: Good to High quality. Wines that offer solid quality in every respect and generally very good typicity. “Good Value” wines will often fall into this category. Worth your attention.

80 – 84: Average to Good quality. The wine is “correct”, displays no noticeable flaws and will provide pleasing, if straightforward, drinking.

76 – 79: Barely Acceptable quality. The wine is not worth your attention nor is it a good value.

75 and Below: Don’t Bother. A wine with noticeable, irremediable flaws.

The 2022 Chablis Vaulorent 1er Cru has another tightly wound nose like the Montee de Tonnerre, a subtle marine element emerging with time, a touch of wild fennel. The palate has much more body and depth than the aforementioned Premier Cru, with good density, a crisp line of acidity and a welcome touch of spice enhancing the finish. Excellent. Slightly more evident wood influence can be found on the less elegant but beautifully layered nose of citrus confit, acacia blossom and wet stone scents. The rich, very generous and solidly powerful larger-bodied flavours are not quite as mineral-driven though they are even more concentrated, all wrapped in a beautifully balanced, long and complex finale. This is also impressive even though I have a slight preference for the MdT at this early stage. Drink 2030+ 91-94 Points, Sweet Spot - Burghound [01/08/2023]

The 2022 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru has a tightly wound bouquet, maybe a little reduced now, rendering it challenging to read. The palate is well-balanced with a malic entry, fine acidity, and modest depth, with a peppery touch lingering on the aftertaste. This needs a little more personality and engagement. The cool and almost reticent nose makes clear that it could be from nowhere but Chablis with its array of prominent mineral reduction, shellfish and iodine-scented pear and floral aromas. The more refined if perhaps slightly less generous middleweight flavours possess both good volume and vibrancy on the lightly stony, persistent and balanced finish. This lovely effort should be more than capable of delivering 7 to 10 years of cellaring potential. Drink 2029+ 90-93 Points, Burghound [01/08/2023]

The 2022 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru is very closed on the nose, perhaps the most austere of William Fevres' cuvees, steely and almost curmudgeonly at the moment. The palate is well-balanced with a palpable saline leaning, very estuarine in style, with touches of oyster shell towards the finish. The purists' choice. Superb. [Neal Martin, 19/09/2023]

Here too there is slightly more evident wood that stops short of fighting with the ripe aromas of various white orchard fruit scents that are nuanced by hints of tidal pool, algae and oyster shell. The denser, powerful and quite serious big-bodied flavours possess a gorgeous texture if not nearly the same level of refinement while displaying superb length on the robust finale. This firmly structured effort is also pretty much a textbook example. Drink 2032+ 92-95 Points, Don t Miss! - Burghound [01/08/2023]

The 2022 Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru is not unlike the Valmur on the nose: backward and a little sultry in style, with faint touches of crustacea coming through. The palate is more generous with orchard fruit, hints of apricot and wild peach, and fine acidity. It is very harmonious but without quite the same complexity as the Valmur on the finish. Still, this should give many years of drinking pleasure. [Neal Martin, 19/09/2023]

The 2022 Chablis Bougros Cote Bouguerots Grand Cru has a clean and precise bouquet with hints of wild peach, apricot blossom, Mirabelle and crushed stone. The palate is well-balanced with a very harmonious entry, blackcurrant leaf and spice, crushed stone and what feels like plenty of extract on the finish. This has great potential, but afford it time in your cellar. [Neal Martin, 19/09/2023]

This is the coolest and most restrained of this group of 2022s with its elegant aromas of prominent mineral reduction, lemon-li3032+me, spice and oyster shell. There is almost painful intensity to the intensely stony and strikingly well-detailed larger-bodied yet still beautifully refined flavours that display huge length on the impeccably well-balanced finale. Like the Preuses, this is very classy and built to repay extended keeping. Drink 2032+ 93-95 Points, Don t Miss! - Burghound [01/08/2023]

The 2022 Chablis Montee de Tonnerre 1er Cru is more reticent on the nose and perhaps doesn't quite engage as the 2021 did last year. A bit bashful at the moment. The palate is well-balanced with a saline entry, though it feels strict and contained, without the flair demonstrated by the Les Lys at the moment. Has this got something up its sleeve? It's a bit too austere and reticent for my liking. [Neal Martin, 19/09/2023]

An elegant, pure and wonderfully airy nose more freely reflects its aromas of white flowers, prominent mineral reduction and plenty of seashore elements. There is at once more volume but, somewhat surprisingly, even better refinement to the medium weight plus flavours that retain excellent detail while also flashing an almost pungent stoniness on the driving, firm and impeccably well-balanced finale. One to look for as this is very impressive. Drink 2030+ 92-94 Points, Sweet Spot - Burghound [01/08/2023]

The 2022 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru has a surprisingly primal bouquet with gooseberry, melon, fruits de mer and citrus peel, with more oyster shell scents developing as it opens, though never quite achieving the flair of the Valmur. The palate is well-balanced, steely and strict, with fine intensity and a saline finish. But it doesn't quite have the precision of Fevre's best cuvees at the moment. [Neal Martin, 19/09/2023]

This is aromatically quite similar to the Cote Bouguerots but with more floral influence. The rich, big-bodied and tautly muscular flavours are also seemingly chiselled from Kimmeridgian, all wrapped in a wonderfully persistent, very dry, balanced and stony finale.
