Henri Gouges 2022

Henri Gouges 2022

This year’s release from Gouges has given us very attractive wines. I feel the consensus from all the trade tasting these wines is that the style of winemaking has evolved in the past 5 years and the wines are all the better for it.

Previously very austere in youth, the Gouges wines are now much more approachable but remain dense and age worthy.

Some great wines here with big scores too.

Domaine Henri Gouges

It took me a few minutes to locate Antoine Gouges in the maze of outbuildings in Nuits Saint-Georges. It’s one of those places that looks deceptively small from the front entrance into the original family maison. Behind lies a tasting room for visitors, the winery, various outbuildings and warehouses. Once found, a little flustered since he thought our rendezvous was 30 minutes later, we settled down to taste through their 2022s. “The flowering was good,” Gouges explains. “It was hot and dry, but we suffered hail twice with a lot of rain in late June when we lost 30% of the crop. The vineyard of Fontaine Jacquinot was wiped out. [Interestingly, an hour before, Denis Chevillon had told me that he had only lost around 10% of the crop in those areas, though hail can be so localized that it can mean a difference between one row and the next.] The rain helped with the maturity of the grapes. Picking was from August 30, with the whites and the reds beginning on September 1 and 2, cropped at 27hL/ha [a figure noticeably smaller than others]. Everything was de-stemmed. We had an early malo, probably because we use low SO2 during vinification, and the cellars are not that cold at this time of the year.” This was a good set of wines from Gouges, capped by two wondrous Nuits Saint-Georges from Les Vaucrains and Les Saint-Georges. The entry-level regional and village crus were mostly bottled after the 2023 harvest. Occasionally, I wonder whether that additional winter in barrel might give them a little more stuffing? Otherwise, those who appreciate the Gouges style of winemaking, which I feel has been fine-tuned in the last five or six years, will find much to like in 2022

The Gouges harvest opened on 31st August for white grapes, followed by the reds from 2nd September. Yields were only 28 hl/ha after some hail on 22nd June and then again a week later, on the southern side of Nuits. They could not make the Clos de la Fontaine Jacquinot cuvée this year as it was badly affected by the hail. Alcohol degrees range between 13 and 13.5%. Because of early malolactic fermentations, the Gouges cousins have decided on a shorter elevage. Some wines were bottled in August, including the white wines. The Gouges hallmark of making dense age worthy wines remains firmly in place.

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a very complex bouquet, a mix of red and black fruit, crushed flowers, and hints of spice coming through with aeration. This seems to "grow" in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannins. It s very pure, so pure that it almost disguises the backbone of this Les Saint-Georges, gaining depth towards the finish with touches of pain d'epice and white pepper. An excellent NSG that will repay cellaring. [Neal Martin, 11/01/2024]

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru was picked towards the beginning of the harvest and is matured in 30% new oak. This is blessed with some of the best aromatics from Gouges: detailed and mineral-driven, a real and tangible sense of Pinote here with a palpable sense of energy. The medium-bodied palate has filigree tannins, joyous red berry fruit and wonderful tension, fanning out with joie-de-vivre on the finish. The infusion/low sulfur regime plus fewer punch downs for this wine has really seen this achieve new heights. [Neal Martin, 11/01/2024]
