Humbert Freres 2022

Humbert Freres 2022

These are without doubt the finest set of wines I have ever tasted from Domaine Humbert Frères En-Primeur – Highly Recommended!

“I have been drinking the Humbert wines for a decade: Linear, precise, full of energy and acidity, they age for many years. The 2022s from barrel had more fat and sweetness than I remember his wines from previous vintages having. This turned out to be representative of other 2022 red wines I tasted in that week. But I am not complaining! The 2022s are less tannic than the 2020s and they will be very well-received by critics and buyers alike! Naturally the wines varied from site to site as one would hope. The wine from Estournelles-Saint-Jacques, a high elevation site in Gevrey-Chambertin was especially compelling. Even more complex and expressive was the 2022 Charmes-Chambertin made from vines Humbert grows in the Mazoyères portion of Charmes. This is a true Grand Cru wine, and should develop into a masterpiece. It will be expensive, but worth it for those who can afford the wine. For those on a more limited budget, the Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes -made from 13 different sites in Gevrey- expresses the basic character of Gevrey beautifully. All the Humbert wines were excellent. After what was a rather quick taste we followed Emmanuel into the vineyards where he had much work to do. His desire to get to work was quite apparent. Tasting is a sort of luxury for the growers.” – Robert Millman, Terroir Sense Wine Review

 2022 Domaine Humbert Frères

Frédéric Humbert, and his younger brother Emmanuel, run this 6 ha domaine though Frédéric has essentially eased out of the day-to-day operations. Readers may notice that the vineyard holdings appear similar to both of the Dugat domaines and this is not by chance – the Humbert brothers are cousins of Claude and Bernard. The younger Humbert simply said that 2022 was “initially difficult here in Gevrey due to the massive rain and hailstorms we had on the 22nd and 25th of June. Thankfully there wasn’t too much damage to the fruit though there was quite a bit of erosion as we had close to a season’s worth in only 2 days. Thereafter though, the summer was hot and extremely dry and by the middle of August, the vineyards were beginning to display signs of hydric stress. Serendipitously, 24 ml of rain fell on the 15th of August and it was just enough to give the vines a sip of water so that they could finish the final ripening. We chose to begin picking on the 31st of August and brought in clean fruit with better-than-expected yields of between 40 and 45 hl/ha. Given how hot the summer was, potential alcohols were entirely reasonable as they ranged from 12 to 13%. Stylistically, the wines remind me of the 1959 vintage and if that turns out to be the case, everyone buying the ’22s is going to be extremely happy.” Humbert noted that the 2022s will be bottled without fining or filtration.

It is really important to understand how Burghound scores.

Burghound Scores explained:

90 – 94: Outstanding. Worth a special effort to purchase and cellar and will provide memorable drinking experiences.

85 – 89: Good to High quality. Burgundies that offer solid quality in every respect and generally very good typicity. “Good Value” wines will often fall into this category. Worth your attention.

Wines rated 90 points or above are worth a special effort to find and cellar. Wines rated 85 or above are recommended, especially among regional and villages level wines. There will be relatively few 90+ point wines, simply because there are relatively few outstanding and superlative wines.

Balanced orders will be given priority.

Offered subject to remaining unsold and final written confirmation.

Delivery will be charged at cost.

Wines to be shipped autumn 2024.

Burghound

From a .20 ha parcel of 60+ year old vines located in Mazoyeres. A moderately toasty nose is composed by notes of the essence of wild dark berries and humus along with soft spice and floral nuances. There is a bit better mid-palate density to the richer if less obviously mineral-driven and refined flavours that display good delineation on the powerful, focused and youthfully austere finish. This is also sufficiently firm to need at least a decade of keeping to resolve the supporting structure. 91-93 Points, Burghound [01/01/2024]

Burghound

From a .18 ha parcel of 65+ year old vines. Here too there is just enough wood to notice surrounding the more elegant and not quite so distinctly earth array of both red and dark wild currant. The succulent, round and delicious middleweight flavours possess a finer texture as well as caressing mouthfeel, all wrapped in a sneaky long and moderately austere finale that is firm enough to repay 7 to 10 years of keeping. 89-91 Points, Burghound [01/01/2024]

50% of the blend comes from Les Marchais and the rest from a wide range of 15 other lieux-dits spread around the commune. Subtle if perceptible wood influence can be found on the more deeply pitched aromas of poached plum, humus and a smoked game hint. There is both more volume and richness to the delicious and vibrant medium-bodied flavours that are, once again, not particularly dense though they do manage to deliver solid depth and persistence on the youthfully austere and moderately firm finale. 88-91 Points, Burghound [01/01/2024]

Burghound

From 55+ year old vines in Les Champs Tions and Les Tellieres. Red Fixin is often likened to a mini Gevrey-Chambertin, but without the corresponding price tag! An exuberantly fresh nose combines notes of mostly essence of various red berries with those of earth and a suggestion of the sauvage. The palate impression of the medium weight flavors is similar to that of the Bourgogne, e.g., not especially dense though I like the vibrancy of the sneaky long and youthfully austere finale that is slightly firmer and more complex. 87-89 Points, Burghound [01/01/2024]

From a .15 ha parcel of 60+ year old vines. Here too the wood treatment is less than subtle though on the ripe and fresh earth-inflected aromas of wild red and dark berries, violet and a hint of leather. The racy and overtly stony middleweight flavours don't possess the same size, weight and muscle though they are noticeably finer and particularly so on the lingering, austere and balanced finale that isn't quite as structured. 90-93 Points, Outstanding - Burghound [01/01/2024]

Burghound

From a holding of 20 to 25-year-old vines that total .91 ha. An exceptionally fresh nose combines notes of bright dark berries and plum with those of violet, earth and a hint of forest floor character, all of which is trimmed in subtle but not invisible wood treatment. The cool, energetic and mineral-infused medium weight flavours possess equally good power and delineation on the serious, dusty and moderately austere finale. I like the balance though this is also sufficiently compact to need all of a decade to resolve the underlying structure. 90-93 Points, Outstanding - Burghound [01/01/2024]
