Le Ragnaie 2019

Le Ragnaie 2019

We are delighted to offer the range of organically grown 2019 Brunello di Montalcino’s from Le Ragnaie, these are wines that should be on any serious collectors ‘must buy’ list.

Le Ragnaie was a rookie estate established by the young Riccardo and Jennifer Campinoti when they bought the farmhouse and some well-placed old vines back in 2003. Since then they have gone on to become one of the region’s brightest new stars. The estate spreads across 15ha, five of which are in the zone where the cellars are based, Le Ragnaie itself. These vines are the highest of any in Montalcino, at 550 metres above sea level, south facing in the central zone above Soldera di Case Basse. As one of the highest points in the region it became famous for bird catchers, in fact the traditional birdcatchers’ net features on the label as part of the winery’s logo. The estate takes its name from the fact that this net looked rather like a spider’s web (Ragna, in Italian.) Complimenting these vineyards are those from Petroso, a vineyard area along the Scarnacuoia road below the village of Montalcino (one of the oldest wine making zones in the area.) in addition to some from Castelnuovo dell’Abate, a vineyard located in the southern sector of Montalcino in front of the Amiata Mountain, next door to Poggio di Sotto. As of 2015 there is a new single cru, Montosoli, one of the most highly-esteemed zones in the whole of the region, sitting on the north side of Montalcino. Organic viticulture is employed, grapes are hand picked, de-stemmed, fermented and then aged in large 25 hl slavonian oak casks for 36 months. The high vineyards of Ragnaie that form the basis of the blend plus the long, gentle macerations result in enormously charming, aromatic and really quite high toned wines that still manage to retain the requisite power. A unique, extremely drinkable style of Brunello that will sweep you off your feet.

“I still remember the first time I tasted a Brunello from Le Ragnaie. It was in 2009 at the Italian Wine Masters tasting in New York City, where I met Riccardo Campinoti and tasted his 2005 Brunello di Montalcino. I was amazed from the first tilt of the glass. This was nothing like any other wine at the event. At that time, finding such a pure expression of Sangiovese in Montalcino was not easy, yet in front of me was a wine of pure berry, florals, Tuscan spice, and minerals – lots and lots of minerals. It was love at first sight.”Eric Guido, Vinous.com

Riccardo Campinotio cites Burgundy and Barolo as his winemaking inspiration. Winemaking is traditional with delicate destemming that keeps the berries relatively intact. This is followed by extended macerations in cement vats and oak lasting from 50 to 60 days. Pump-overs are soft, and Riccardo Campinoti describes cap management as “infusions,” a word we commonly hear today among those who adhere to classic Italian winemaking. The whole process, or élevage, is slow and long.

This wine is a star of the vintage. It is made with fruit from vines planted in 1968 in ancient soils rich in quartz at a very high 600 meters in elevation. The Le Ragnaie 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V. V. (the initials stand for vecchie vigne, or "old vines") reveals a soulful personality with a very elegant set of aromas and compelling complexity. There is heritage rose, lilac and something earthy like tarragon or marjoram. Underripe cherry and redcurrant are found at the core; however, that ethereal herbal note continues to the palate where it meets a chalky mineral tone. Powdery tannins stick to the side of your mouth for a very long time. Only 4,400 bottles were made. Drink 2028-2050 99 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate [Monica Larner, 14/12/2023]

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino opens slowly in the glass, dusty and floral, with depths of dark red fruit and exotic spice. This is silky smooth with medium-bodied textures and vibrant acidity that propels its tart wild berry fruits and mineral tones as rosy inner florals race across the palate. It tapers off with admirable length and concentration. Crunchy tannins frame the experience without slowing its momentum. The 2019 is a gorgeous blend of vintage and house style. Don't miss it. This wine kisses the sky with fruit from bush-trained vines planted in 2012 at the highest point of the appellation (above 600 meters in elevation). This is a wine to watch in the future, especially as these vines grow older. The Le Ragnaie 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Passo del Lume Spento has a fine and direct bouquet with vibrant red fruit, cranberry, pressed rose and rosemary blossom. Fruit and floral components run very strong, and you don't get as much of the earthiness that we find in the other wines. Instead, it feels mineral and salty. Crunchy fruit and powdery tannins fuel a very long and polished finish with a contained 13.5% alcohol content. This wine is fluid and more of a shape-shifter. Only 4,400 bottles were made. The Le Ragnaie 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli has medium-plus concentration and pretty aromas of cherry fruit, redcurrant, crushed mineral, watercolor paint and a generally riper bouquet, certainly when compared to the Passo del Lume Spento. These vines sit at 300 meters in elevation with mixed clay soils (and higher pH) next door to Baricci. It delivers more of a punch, and there is a savory component with leather or mild tobacco that changes with time, eventually transitioning to a point of sweetness. Structurally, this is a very beautiful wine (with 3,800 bottles released). Drink 2026-2048 97 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate [Monica Larner, 14/12/2023]
