Poggio di Sotto 2019

Poggio di Sotto 2019

Ian D’Agata has just published his scores for 2019 Brunello di Montalcino, a vintage he says that is poised to be remembered as truly outstanding for Brunello, and only two wines have been scored 100 Points, Poggio di Sotto and Salvioni. He goes on to say that the Poggio di Sotto may well be the wine of the vintage.

Poggio di Sotto

Founded in 1989 by Tuscan legend Piero Palmucci, Poggio di Sotto is an established benchmark, traditional Brunello estate, producing some of the most refined and sought-after wines in the region. In 2011, Poggio di Sotto became part of the Collemassari Wine Estates. Their 10 hectares of vineyards are all planted with high quality low-yielding Sangiovese Grosso clones in the sunny Castelnuovo del Abate region on the south east side of Montalcino. With protection from Monte Amiata, The vineyards are situated at three different levels between 250 and 400 metres above sea level and the viticulture is organic. Well exposed vineyards tempered by cooling breezes, high quality clones and gentle winemaking make for some of the most ethereal and seductive wines in Tuscany. Claudia Tipa, owner of the great Bolgheri estate Grattamacco, acquired the Poggio di Sotto in 2012 and has determinedly changed nothing in viticulture and production, keeping the same team in place. Long macerations, frequent pump overs, and aging for a minimum three and a half years in large used Slavonian oak casks are essentials for the Brunello. The estate’s entire production amounts to 3,000 cases, including the Rosso.

“A huge success for an estate that has known many over the years, this may well be the wine of the vintage.”

 100 Points, Ian D’Agata

Ian D’Agata

Bright, full red. Nuanced, extremely deep and complex nose offers raspberry, redcurrant, super ripe red cherry, tobacco, sandalwood, warm stones, vanilla and a violet nuance. Suave, juicy and multilayered, with harmonious acidity nicely framing the wine s concentrated red plum, tobacco and mocha flavours. This subtle but very concentrated Brunello finishes delicately savoury and mineral, with substantial but smooth tannins and lovely lingering perfume of sweet spices and perfume. A huge success for an estate that has known many over the years, this may well be the wine of the vintage. Drinking window: 2028-2045. 100 Points, Ian D Agata [Ian D’Agata, 01/03/2024]

Vinous

Dusty roses, worn leather, dried strawberries and arid earth form a classic bouquet as the dynamic 2019 Brunello di Montalcino blossoms in the glass. This is feminine yet deep and textural, with ripe plums and black cherries motivated by brisk acidity. Violet inner florals and licorice hints form toward the close. The 2019 leaves a salty mineral staining to mingle with fine-grained tannins and spice, as it finishes with incredible length, yet still so fresh. This is incredibly youthful and inward today, but the potential is off the charts. I expect the 2019 to put on some weight and blossom over the next five to ten years. Glorious.
