San Leonardo 2019

San Leonardo 2019

San Leonardo is often referred to as the “Sassicaia of the North”.

It is a legendary Bordeaux blend from Italy, but at a very affordable price (compare to Sassicaia 2021 for £1,200+/6!).

Founded over 1,000 years ago as a monastery, San Leonardo has for three centuries been the home of the Guerrieri Gonzaga family, but it is only since the second half of the twentieth century, when Marchese Carlo took over, that this estate began to take wine production seriously. Following a spell working at Tenuta San Guido with the creator of Sassicaia, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, Carlo was inspired to see if the clay-limestone soils of his family estate in Trentino could yield similar results to those achieved by his mentor back in Tuscany. In 1978 the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines joined the Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Carmenère already planted, and in 1982 the first vintage of the flagship San Leonardo was produced, rapidly taking its place in the pantheon of Italy’s greatest wines.

What the critics have to say :

“San Leonardo can have an elegance-cum-depth capable of taking on the best clarets of the world” – Nick Belfrage MW

“Beautifully low-key and like the most refined red Bordeaux imaginable… Surely the most successful Bordeaux blend of Northern Italy” – Jancis Robinson MW

“… one of the great wines of Italy… Sassicaia and San Leonardo seem like brothers separated in childhood” – Monica Larner

“The Sassicaia of the North” – James Suckling

The comparisons to Sassicaia make a fair bit of sense as Marchese Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga (San Leonardo’s owner) spent some time working at Tenuta San Guido back in the 1960s helping to create Sassicaia with the help of the superstar consultant Giacomo Tachis who was later employed at San Leonardo.

“The 2019s at San Leonardo are sure to appeal to lovers of the estate’s classic style. I had my first glimpse of the 2019s when tasting the Rosso Villa Gresti last year. During my last visit, I was looking forward to the 2019 San Leonardo and Carménère. Both wines exceeded my expectations. They represent is a return to the classic San Leonardo style, cool-toned, structured and alpine in feel. A case in the cellar is sure to provide decades of satisfaction. The wines will be released later this year, as Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga has chosen to delay the release dates of their flagship reds. This is really no problem for lovers of the brand because these are wines that demand further cellaring.” – Eric Guido, Vinous

The 2019 San Leonardo is impossible to ignore, embodying everything I love about this distinctly northern Italian Bordeaux blend. Masses of white pepper, sage, incense, sandy earth and fresh tobacco give way to dusty red currants. This is a model of elegance yet salty and savory to the core, with mineral-laden red and black fruits that flow across silky textures. The 2019 finishes classically dry with a crunchy tannic bite yet maintains an impossible freshness as savory herbal tones slowly fade. This is stunning, recalling the absolute top vintages I've ever tasted from San Leonardo. Drink 2026-2040 96 Points, Eric Guido, Vinous [Eric Guido, 04/01/2024]
