White Burgundies 2022

2022 Vintage Summary – A Terrific Year for White Burgundies

“The 2022 white burgundy vintage can be summed up concisely and thusly: 2022 is the best white Burgundy vintage since 2017 and rivals, if not surpasses, 2014 in quality. Genuinely great wines were made up and down the classification hierarchy and in every commune. Moreover, unlike 2021, quantities are good though not actually generous so there is a reasonable chance that you will be able to find them, a big plus because you will want to find them.

As such, there’s really not much to dislike and a whole lot to be excited about. I believe that once you taste a few of the 2022s, you will see how good they are. It’s a vintage to buy and in quantity as the wines should drink reasonably well young but amply reward mid-term keeping, and in some cases, even longer-term cellaring.”  Allen Meadows’, Burghound

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Grande Montagne 1er Cru has a slightly more tertiary bouquet, a little chalky in style and nicely focused. The palate is very tensile, with slightly more acidity than other cuvees, quite saline and certainly spicy towards the finish with a peppery aftertaste. There's a lot of "fun" in this "big mountain." The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Clos des Murees 1er Cru, habitually the last to be picked due to vine stress, has a slightly leaner nose than the Clos Saint-Jean despite this being a warm micro-climate. The palate doesn't have the panache of other cuvees, but there is fine delineation. It's missing a bit of grip on the finish, though it will provide pleasure in its youth. A delicate, sensitive thing. [Neal Martin, 11/01/2024]

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Maltroie 1er Cru, raised in one-third new oak, has a well-defined bouquet with yellow plum, jasmine and light brioche aromas. It will require a couple of years to absorb the wood. The palate is well-balanced with a subtle walnut note on the entry, quite linear in style, with stem ginger veins towards the finish. Impressive length, this should give over a decade's worth of drinking pleasure. [Neal Martin, 02/10/2023]

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet La Boudriotte 1er Cru has a crisp and precise bouquet, very focused with seamlessly integrated oak, crushed limestone and petrichor scents percolating through the yellow fruit. The palate is very well-balanced, with a slightly honeyed opening. It s one of the richer cuvees by taste, though analytically, it has very good acidity and 13% alcohol. Fans out wonderfully on the finish. Excellent. [Neal Martin, 11/01/2024]

This is a tiny 1er Cru vineyard of only 1.2 hectares, surely one of Meursault s best-kept secrets. The average vine age is 60 years from this cool higher site. A very judicious use of oak with a mix of 1 to 4 year old barrels (no new oak). A detailed & finely nuanced Chardonnay & a very citrus driven expression of Meursault. Terrific energy, persistence & length. Les Ravelles is the furthest Premier Cru from the village itself, adjacent to the hamlet of Blagny and tucked up above the Puligny border. This is perhaps the reason for the dramatic and unique stance of this delicious wine.

There are two wines from this terrific estate that scored identical 18s, and the main difference between the two is that Les Ravelles is more forward and enticing right now, and Meursault 1er Cru Blagny Sous le Dos d Ane ( 320 per 6 bottles IB; 18+/20) is closed and introverted and will require at least four years to unravel (yes, that s a pun)! In a surprisingly short period, Chapelle de Blagny has become a must-buy Meursault producer. These bottles cost less than 70 all in, and I think this is a steal for this level of refinement.

Just uphill from Meursault-Perrieres 1er Cru, an outcrop of rock - resembling a donkey s back - which gives the wine its name. Average vine age here is 80 years old & perhaps the most mineral of all the whites from this domaine, and yet also deeply concentrated (wide & long). In keeping with the house style of no new oak in the whites - it's also 1 to 4 year old barrels here.

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Blanc Les Perrieres 1er Cru has a precise, slightly steelier and more defined nose than the Clos de Porrets Blanc: apple blossom and freshly tilled meadow aromas. The 2022 Bourgogne Blanc Hautes-Cotes de Beaune Montagne 382 matured in 25% new 228-liter barrels. It has a complex bouquet with scents of chamomile and white tea interlacing the citrus fruit. This astonishing white Burgundy squares the circle of excellent ripeness and concentration with great freshness and vitality. Lovely aromas of bergamot and candied lime peel with a creaminess that s deftly wrapped around the firm mineral core. Very long, focused and polished finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Unfiltered. Drink or hold. [Stuart Pigott, 22/06/2024]

The 4-hectare plot is made up of 3 hectares of vines and 1 hectare of natural areas of great biodiversity: scree slopes, hedges, orchards, limestone grasslands with numerous orchids and even a few corm trees, which are extremely rare these days and whose hard wood used to be used to make the screws for the grape presses.

Pale lemon yellow. The bouquet is lightly fruited, showing class and delicacy. Nothing raw and no discernible oak. Impressive on the plate, with fresh ripe apple, now just a little wood, but subordinate to the fruit. Excellent acid balance. Drink from 2025-2029. [Jasper Morris, 01/10/2023]

As the name suggests, the 2022 Bourgogne Aligote Dore Presse Verticale is pressed in a vertical press and is matured in 75% new 500-liter oak barrels. The nose has slightly more intensity, a little more yellow fruit and perhaps a tad more richness. It is interesting to compare this directly with the regular cuvee: there is just a touch more depth and structure towards the finish, though the fruit profile is essentially the same. A fleshy aligote fermented in barrels with a medium body and delicious, golden and spicy layers. Exciting golden and orange fruit with spice on a long finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. [Stuart Pigott, 22/06/2024]

The name of this cuvee refers to the winemaking technique which differs by using the vertical press: type of press used from the middle age until the 1960 s, when is was replaced by the horizontal press (mechanical and pneumatic). Here, the vertical press marks the style of this wine. I can t use the VP for the whole lot as the press lasts over 6 hours - but I love the straight quality of the wine that comes outs. So just 1,500 bottles of this.

Clean, mobile, fluid - great wine - just unbelievably good - is the d Auvenay better? Grand Vin. Bill Nanson commenting on the inaugural 2021 vintage.

This originates with the same fruit as the regular bottling, but is pressed with a vertical press and then fermented and aged using 80% new wood. This clearly marks the nose, though the wood is well chosen. Fresh tangy Aligote, much gentler than the regular press even though by analysis there is more total acidity with this method. It doesn t show through the oak though. The aftertaste is longer and more complete but the question is, how long for the oak to integrate fully? Drink from 2025-2029 [Jasper Morris, 01/10/2023]

The 2022 Bourgogne Aligote Dore has a fragrant, pure bouquet with scents of honeysuckle, quince and a touch of wild peach, delicate but supremely well-focused. The palate is well-balanced with a silver bead of acidity. Quite taut, not a "fat" or pithy Aligote, but rather a quite tensile one with a dash of spice that enlivens the finish. Here s a daring aligote that s been vinified in small oak cooperage. It has an excellent integration of vanilla oak and cool citrus fruit on the barely medium-bodied palate. Lovely silky texture in spite of the crisp, lemony acidity. I love the positively austere chalky finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Unfiltered. Drink or hold. We have the privilege to possess old field selections of Aligote Dore or Golden Aligote . Therefore the vines are not very productive but have a very nice maturity. Our old vines give this wine a natural vivacity and fruits aromas. Traditional high-density vineyard (10,000 vines per ha).

Pale colour, soft pear and greengage aromatics, then much fiercer on the palate. Mostly in 600 litres which helps soften. The acidity is like old style Aligote but there is much more character in the fruit than there would have been back in the day. Drink from 2025-2027 [Jasper Morris, 01/10/2023]
