Tasting Notes
Neal Martin 91-93
The 2025 Ferriere was picked from 5 to 19 September, and this year includes a slightly higher percentage of Petit Verdot. It is matured in 35% new barrels and 30% in ovoid concrete tanks/amphora. This has a delightful, well-defined bouquet with iris flower and subtle undergrowth scents, plenty of black fruit, yet it feels streamlined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, silky smooth in texture, a keen line of acidity and more mineralite on the finish compared to its Margaux sibling , La Gurgue. This is a delicious Margaux that will be approachable in its youth but will age in bottle. Just 12.7% alcohol here.
Anticipated maturity: 2030-2055
Antonio Galloni 90-92
The 2025 Ferriere is laced with dark blueberry fruit, creme de cassis, lavender, menthol and licorice. Inky and unctuous in feel, with striking mid-palate sweetness, the 2025 is a total charmer. The blend is 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, including all 6 hectares of old-vine Merlot. Yields were just 25 hectoliters per hectare. Firm chocolatey tannins support the finish. There’s a lot of substance here, and good potential too.
Anticipated maturity: 2035-2065
The Drinks Business 93-95
(Margaux; 70% Cabernet Sauvignon; 24% Merlot; 6% Petit Verdot; a final yield of 25 hl/ha; pH 3.75; 12.7% alcohol; certified organic and biodynamic; tasted with Claire Villars-Lurton and Gonzague Lurton in Bordeaux). I love the purity of the aromatic fireworks here – black cherry fruit, black currant and a touch of black currant too. There’s a little grated dark chocolate and a hint of violet, with a subtle suggestion of wild sage. This is impressively plump and plush, quite succulent and incredibly juicy but never at the expense of density and concentration. Overall, this is quite a substantial wine for Ferriere, with a viscosity rare in the vintage, above all in Margaux. The old vine Petit Verdot brings additional character and distinctiveness.
James Suckling 94-95
A refined texture, with red currants, cherries and bark on a medium body with fine and caressing tannins and a long, bright finish. Firm and crunchy at the end. A blend of 66% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot, 6% petit verdot and 4% cabernet franc. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification.
