Elio Grasso – Affordable Drinkers!

Without doubt one of the most consistently delicious Italian red wines we taste every year is Gianluca Grasso’s phenomenal Barbera Vigna Martina. From its incredible aromatic nose of crushed dark cherry, plum, spice and a hint of oak, to its explosively mouth filling, succulent, brambly dark Barbera fruit with lovely underlying freshness, it rocks on from start to long, lingering finish.

 It’s crafted from 35+ year old Barbera vines in east and west facing parcels of sandy limestone soils, perfectly situated around the Grasso’s famed Gavarini Barolo Cru in the Monforte zone. With Barbera, it’s all about the terroir, and this one is grown in prime Barolo territory. It is fermented in stainless steel, then aged for 18 months in 50% new and 50% one year old French barrels, keeping the oak nuanced and in check.

Elio Grasso’s fantastic Dolcetto d’Alba is surely one of the best value red wines in the entire Langhe. Perfectly pitched and beautifully infused with youthful ripe cherry and plum. Plump, bold and impressive, there is a sublime freshness here, lifted gracefully by a delicious vein of mineral acidity. It is ideal for drinking over the next two to three years.

Gianluca Grasso’s value-packed Langhe Nebbiolo hails from the Barolo cru of Gavarini and is basically the wines that don’t make the cut for the exquisite Barolo of the same name. However, for drinkable, intensely-aromatic and high-toned Nebbiolo, it doesn’t get any better than this!
